Every business is run on agreements. Some of the agreements are printed and signed, as in contracts with your clients, vendors, etc. These agreements can be felt, seen, read and discussed.

But what isn’t always so obvious is the unspoken agreement we’re entering into. This is the one that, when everyone is in alignment, makes our business a joy to run. And, when not in harmony, it’s the type of agreement that can cause us hours of stress, unhappiness and messy situations that are difficult to navigate.

I call these Soul Agreements.

A contract is a legally binding document between two or more parties, that clearly spells out obligations, commitments and expectations between everyone involved.

A Soul Agreement is a commitment to yourself, that says:

“The action I am taking is in complete harmony with what is right for me. My actions are a reflection of my being clear, honest and direct about what I want.”

When a business contract is in alignment with your Soul Agreement, everyone is happy and the relationship flows smoothly. But, it’s when you enter into a contract that is not in alignment with your Soul Agreement that problems begin.

Here are 3 simple tips for aligning your business contracts with your Soul Agreements, so that both remain in integrity and you avoid broken contracts or hurt feelings on either side.

Tip #1 Be Honest About What You Want

Women often hesitate to ask for what they want, but holding back isn’t being honest with yourself, or with the person you’re contracting with. Try asking for what you want using simple language like this:

“In order for this to work for me, I need ________________”

You’ll be surprised at how often simply stating what you want will bring you positive results. Plus, you’ll enjoy the added benefit of feeling relieved and confident in your ability to represent yourself with grace and ease.

Tip #2 Be Honest About Where You Might Be Breaking Your Soul Agreements

Did you know that you have a Soul Agreement to charge what you’re worth? Or to be recognized as an expert? Or to get your first paying client if you’re new in business?

Under earning, procrastinating or holding back because of what others might think of you are all ways you may be breaking your Soul Agreement. Remember, what we practice on the inside, is reflected on what we manifest on the outside.

Let’s say you’re about to launch a new program. Before you start marketing, make a Soul Agreement that you’ll expand your confidence by committing that you’ll joint venture with a higher level partner than you’ve collaborated with before. This agreement is with yourself, to make it happen, no matter what. Remember, this is a contract.

Tip #3 Be Honest About How Handle A Contracting Issue

Last year, I had a situation come up where a critical component of a contract was clearly broken by the other party. I had three choices: put up with it and stew in silence; get p*ssed off and vent at the guilty party; or I could reconnect with my Soul Agreement (which is to speak up for what I need, to be heard and to be respected), then pick up the telephone and address the situation with grace and authority.

I chose the third option and it worked out brilliantly. As a result, I strengthened my confidence in handling touchy situations like this, plus, I received what I needed from the other person in order to feel good about continuing our relationship, and, we’re still friends, which is the best part.

My Challenge For You Is To Practice Keeping Your Soul Agreement, No Matter What

With your Soul Agreement firmly in place, all of your other business contracts will serve you more powerfully.
